AOI Lecture - Making Your Mark

ONLINE PRESENCE
-use Cargo Collective to build a creative professional website
-use 'I Want My Name' to get your own domain
-images on your website should speak for themselves, no text, just simply titles
-contact page should be email and social media only [no contact forms]
-email should sit directly under website header
-mix images of commissions and personal work

SELF-PROMOTION - GETTING COMMISSIONS
-don't put work in your portfolio that you don't want to do gain
-make a catalogue of your own contacts or people you want to work with
-keep tabs on professionals/ business you want to work with or have worked with in the past
-give people an update on your practice, send them some work
-study where your niche is
-select clients your work is appropriate for

PERSONAL PROJECTS
-direct your personal projects around what you want to do/ your dream client
-carry out hypothetical projects for clients, re-design a cover etc
-personal projects should be constant so they drive your commissions

PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL/ PRINTED MATTER
-use 1/4 in grad show, 3/4 to send out to professionals
-send out printed material to clients you want to work for
-print less at a higher quality
-use a concertina to display multiple images
-keep people up to date on your work, previous clients, dream clients

COMMUNICATION
-address emails or letters with person's first name
-double check you're spelling names properly
-Hi Lou, Hope you are well, [body of email], Thank you, Abbie Mooney

SOCIAL MEDIA
-positive outlook > progressive
-keep all social media/ website handles the same e.g. ab.bie.mooney
-have a Facebook page to enable people to tag your work
-posts close-ups/ time lapses/ sketchbook pages/ videos/ w.i.p

FREELANCE
-register for income tax
-be your own book keeper
-keep up to date accounts
-retain all claimable receipts
-keep paperwork from ALL jobs
-tax return > integral material resources can be claimed back/ cultural expenditure
-keep record of all licenses given
-use Xero or Quickbooks > free accountants

MORAL RIGHTS
-right to be credited> paternity
-right of integrity
-right to not have work falsely attributed to you
-no right ever to own YOUR original artwork

COPYRIGHT
-right to copy
-begins as soon as I make my work
-licensed out for clients based on time/ place/ duration/ media/ format
-copyright exists in part or whole
-use multiple reference images so you don't rise copying too directly> infringement
-copyright assignment> relinquish entire copyright over to client = loss of money/ control/ relationship
-all licenses are exclusive 
-"I'm very happy to license it as per industry standard"
-high-risk clients > authors/ self-publishers/ start-up
-'buy out' is essentially copyright assignment so check it is time specific

ONLINE RIGHTS
-protect your work online so you can always be identified as author
-low resolution files [72dpi]
-put your name in the file name
-use © symbol on every page/ blog/ social media
-Illustrations © Abbie Mooney
-put © on instagram as deterrent

NEGOTIATIONS
-do not work for free OR undervalue
-quote accurately> no ball park figures
-have all the faces> what/where/when/how/why
-narrow down the license as much as you can so there are no loop holes
-do not work on a day rate > these involve copyright assignment
-ask all the questions
-where are they going to use it?
-how long are they going to use it for?
-exactly what size and purpose is it for?

CONTRACTS
-must be written
-two equal halves
-put licenses on invoices too
-'the license is exclusive to you as is industry standard'
-make an agreement binding
-crucial clauses> termination/ cancellation/ rejection/ sub-licensing
-cancelled at roughs = 33% cancelled at end = 100%

EXTRAS
-email work with all images on one page, pdf file of small size
-always go by UK law, regardless of client
-day rates only apply to murals/ live drawing/ typesetting and layout design
-start with an editorial personal project> 3 outcomes
