Hello there, I'm Abbie, an illustrator and researcher based in Leeds, UK. My work is informed by a concern with the values and aesthetics of British heritage and popular art. Through playful language and colour, my practice is a celebration of heritage crafts through contemporary application of letterpress and sign painting, printmaking and bookbinding. Contextual research is at the forefront of everything I do.

Creative Strategy - Goal Setting
Who are you now? Has your view of your practice changed?
- More concerned with research and the sharing of knowledge than commercialisation
- Experienced a turning point at beginning of second year that I did't want to be a freelance illustrator; why make work for someone else needs and aesthetics when I can make it for my own? But use my creative skills and knowledge to help enlighten others through workshops/ teaching.
- My illustration practice functions more as visual thinking and processing of a theory based practice
What are your plans for the structure of your future practice? Collaboration: Individual: Full-time employment?
- Intend to maintain an individual craft/ print-based practice as a research process and for my own personal development
- May need to acquire volunteering/ part-time experience in relevant arts & culture outlets to enhance my CV
- End goal to attain full-time employment in heritage/ arts sector or in lecturing
Research Goals: What? Where Who? Why? How?
- Identify appropriate post-grad progression routes e.g. masters / PhD/ internship; Who do I want to learn from? Where do I want to spend the next part of my life/ creative journey? Would a new city open up new opportunities?
- Need to 'get my foot in the door' in an arts and heritage establishment, or in the field generally
- Don't be put off by large organisations, but local can be more intimate and rewarding
What does your professional practice need to grow?
EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE
- My professional development will rely on a consistent written output; maintain a thorough, critical, and up to date blog
- I've got the interest and academic grounding but now I need hands on experience and field specific knowledge
