SB2 - The Illustrated Self INITIAL DRAWINGS & CRIT FEEDBACK


IDEAS CARRIED FORWARD FROM REFLECTIONS
  • Nostalgia - toys as metaphor for play, imagery of past eras

    INITIAL REALISATIONS
    Following on from from my initial thoughts and self reflections, I have started to visualise some potential responses, focusing on the motif of me as a 'brass bander'. Something I identified in myself is my interest in the communities brought about working class cultures, and I feel that being a member of a brass band is my own way of keeping this alive. Characterising myself in the poster in my brass band uniform then seems like an appropriate way to capture my interest in character design and my own connection with working class traditions. Character also serves as an appropriate vehicle through which I can maintain a playful, fun tone of voice, relevant to my wider practice. I am particularly pleased with the character based image as I feel I have channelled some of the devices employed in my visual narratives work, exploring exaggerated forms and comical shapes, something which I would like to explore in my progressing practice. 

    The image of the contents of the brass band jacket, whilst communicating the idea of having many tools, is perhaps too literal in the communication of all the components that inform my practice. I feel that the figure running through the falling objects achieves a greater sense of being surrounded by curiosities and interests, but may perhaps also be too literal in interpretation of the brief. It could be interesting to explore the motif of the brass band character but with a more abstract or conceptual narrative. 


    The image of me striking the timpani is my favourite so far as I feel it explores two narratives. The literal message of a player in a brass band, and the more metaphorical idea of being part of this community and how it strikes a chord in imagination and inspiration within my practice. The image of things flying off the timpani seems to enhance the idea of an interconnection between the items, perhaps creating a more solid narrative than in the alternative sketches. 



    With consideration of my interests in nostalgia and authenticity, I have been considering screen-print as the method of production for my poster. Here I have been considering a reduced colour palette and how colours might work alongside each other, as a basic starting point. 

    CRIT FEEDBACK
    During the group crit, we mainly discussed the content of our presentations and the wider issue of practice, but I was also able to gather some feedback on my initial ideas. Whilst the use of a character was celebrated for the relation to my intent for practice and the tone of voice it achieves, relevant to my wider practice, my peers discussed that my drawings so far were a bit surface level and not communicating the connection between all the elements in the image.  I understand this criticism as it is an aim of the brief to illustrate the 'self' as a whole, rather than all the separate components that make it up. 

    My peers seemed intrigued by my interpretation of working class cultures, focusing on positive, romanticised ideas of community and heritage, something which was praised as an appropriate interpretation of the subject matter that complimented my concerns with nostalgia and authenticity. 

    From the suggestions discussed, I now need to focus on developing a more abstract response that is driven on conceptual ideas rather that just immediate clues. Some more brainstorming is definitely needed to get to this point, but I think the key words that my peers identified should drive this; playful, nostalgic, authenticity.
